The Body Before the Water

Paulina's approach to mobility, breath and physical preparation inside a THKC kite week.

Detail of shoulder and neck — body before movement.

In kiteboarding, progression does not begin only when the kite is in the air.  It begins before that.

In the way the body arrives to the beach. In the way someone breathes before entering the water. In the mobility of the hips, the stability of the shoulders, the capacity to rotate, react, recover and stay calm while the environment keeps changing.

This is where Paulina's work enters the THKC week.

Paulina is not there to add a wellness layer to the experience. Her role is more precise than that. She works with the body as part of the rider's progression system: mobility, strength, breath, coordination, recovery and presence.

A kite week asks a lot from the body. Beginners often arrive with closed shoulders, rigid hips, tension in the lower back, limited core awareness and a natural difficulty coordinating both sides of the body under pressure. Advanced riders face a different demand: repeated action, impact, explosive movement, recovery, tissue care and the need to stay in shape.

Paulina's sessions are designed around that reality

For beginners, the work prepares the muscles and movement patterns they will need later in the day during their kiteboarding lesson. For more advanced riders, the focus moves between activation and recovery: fast-twitch fibers for days of action and progression on the water, slower mobility and flexibility work for circulation, oxygenation and the health of tendons, cartilage and connective tissue after impact.

The week is not designed to exhaust the body.

It is designed to manage energy.

That distinction matters. Inside THKC, physical preparation is not separated from the rest of the experience. It supports the coaching, the water time, the downwinders, the recovery, the conversations and the way each rider learns to understand their own rhythm.

Paulina, originally from Mexico and based in Tulum, works privately with clients across the area's private villa and high-end hospitality scene. Her background includes Ashtanga yoga, mat pilates, calisthenics, breathwork, ice bath recovery and more than ten years of personal and professional practice. She came to THKC first as a rider.

Already connected to kiteboarding, she was looking for progression when she met Ivan, founder of THKC. Their connection grew through conversations around the sport, the body, discipline, beauty, environment and the way kiteboarding can be lived beyond performance alone.

Ivan invited her to join the project in 2025. This year, she chose to return.

Not only because of the kite. Because the project represented something she recognized in herself: a way of living the sport, appreciating the environment, and paying attention to the details that make an experience feel intentional.

Her sessions often close with breath.

Not as a ritual placed at the end, but as a way to regulate the nervous system, bring the mind back to the body and prepare the rider for what comes next.

Coordination is also central: working both sides, synchronizing movement, creating a more fertile ground for the hours that follow with an instructor or coach.

No one should pretend that a body transforms physically in seven days.

That is not the point.

The real transformation is educational.

A rider may leave with a better understanding of how to prepare, how to recover, how to listen, how to move, how to breathe, and how to care for the body that allows the sport to happen.

For Paulina, feeling good in the body means being functional.

Strong enough to move well. Mobile enough to adapt. Present enough to listen. Conscious enough to age well.

In that sense, the body is not outside the kite week.

It is the first spot.

Hand on lower back — a quiet adjustment, attention to the body.

Paulina is a Mexican movement instructor based in Tulum, where she works privately with clients across the area's private villa and high-end hospitality scene. Her practice combines mobility, strength, yoga, breathwork and body awareness, with a focus on helping people feel stronger, safer, more functional and more present in their bodies.

She has more than ten years of personal practice and professional experience in yoga and movement. She is certified in Ashtanga Yoga 200hrs RYT, accredited by Yoga Alliance, and has continued her education across mat pilates, calisthenics level 1, ice bath recovery and breathing techniques.

Her approach is built around presence, discipline, functional movement and the connection between mind, body and breath. Inside THKC, her work supports the kiteboarding week by preparing riders physically and mentally before the water, and helping them recover intelligently after demanding sessions.
